Research
We are proud to support Ecocean, leading the world in photo identifications of whale sharks. Photographs taken during whaleshark interaction can help to identify individual sharks based on their unique spot patterns and help us to better understand where whalesharks travel to and their global distribution.
We are also extremely proud to be the only company on the Ningaloo to support the Hubbs Research Institute, San Diego, in the tagging and retrieval of tags from whale sharks. Every season, acclaimed Marine Biologist Dr. Brent Stewart uses our whaleshark tours as a platform for carrying out his reasearch, involving our specialy trained crew and providing an enriching experience for passengers interested in more than just the tourism side of whalesharks. Data tags are attached to the sharks and left on to gather invaluable information about their behaviours and where they are spending their time both geographically and at depth. Our staff are the only crew in the Ningaloo trained to retrieve the tags when the sharks are spotted again. This season our crew have retrieved a number of data tags each with over a full year of information, a world's first. This data is helping to unlock the mysteries of the whalesharks allowing us to better understand these creatures and enhance wolrdwide conservation efforts.
